About RotoStandings
RotoStandings ranks NBA, MLB, and NFL players and teams the way a roto-style fantasy league would, but across allof each league’s history, on a fair, era-adjusted playing field. The NBA is scored on the classic nine roto categories (points, rebounds, assists, steals, blocks, three-pointers made, field-goal %, free-throw %, and turnovers), MLB on the 5×5 hitter and pitcher categories, and the NFL on fantasy points.
Era-adjusted z-scores
Raw stats can’t be compared across eras: a 1965 season and a 2024 season are different games. So every player-season is scored by z-scores: how many standard deviations above or below average a player was against the other players from that same season. Bird ’86 is measured against 1986 peers, Curry ’16 against 2016 peers. That per-season normalization is what makes cross-era comparison fair.
Rate categories (FG% and FT% in the NBA, AVG, ERA, and WHIP in MLB) are volume-weighted, so a 1-for-1 shooter doesn’t look like an elite one and nobody is excluded for a small sample. Older seasons are only scored on the categories that were actually tracked at the time (in the NBA: steals and blocks from 1973-74, turnovers from 1977-78, three-pointers from 1979-80).

Roto value is intentionally different from “best player”: a category specialist can out-rank a flashier star, and the toggles let you define value for yourself.
